Description

Even if you weren’t born yet when Sally Field flew out of TV screens into America’s living rooms as Sister Bertrille, you’ve probably caught her old show in reruns. This Sister Flighty Hat looks just like the one Field wore. Did you know that there was an actual order of nuns who wore that type of headdress? It’s called a “cornette,” and was based on the normal everyday headdress worn by middle-class women in medieval days. And while there’s no record of any nun really taking flight, those who wore cornettes did often have trouble staying upright in high winds. Some (including the author of the book on which the TV show was based) think that was the reason the order abandoned cornettes in favor of simple veils in 1964.
